This last semester of law school I had a hard time focusing. Then I discovered Facebook poker (Zynga). I have decided that it is by far one of my greatest discoveries. Zynga has become my study buddy. I can sit at my computer with my book and read for a minute or two until a bell sound notifies me that it’s my turn. And, if I’m in a “tournament” I don’t even have to respond - it automatically folds and I don’t lose my seat. Good stuff.
So, I have this newfound fascination with Texas Hold ‘Em and I’m going to test my chops in Vegas next week. I have a few strategies in mind, such as buying into tournaments so I’m able to stop when I get kicked off the table and control how many more buy-ins I can afford. But, I have a few habits to break: going all in before the flop if I have pocket aces, or becoming married to my hand (such as three of a kind) when I have a suspicion that the other guy has one that's better (cause he went all in). Sometimes it’s so hard to give up a hand like three of a kind after I’ve already bet so many chips (albeit fake ones). Hopefully I can keep my attachment to my cards at a minimum and play more conservatively with real money. :D
I’m also going to check out a new show opening at the Westin Vegas called “Secrets.” It’s a magic show by a woman who has been voted “Female Magician of the Year,” among numerous other accolades. I’m very excited to see it. I look up to her for crushing a male dominated field –and- she is super cool. Also, I am hoping to network and learn a little about showbiz in Vegas and compare/contrast it to what I’ve learned thus far about showbiz in LA.
I spend a lot of my free time in Orange County to help my
grandmother and my nephew. My
grandmother and I are co-guardians of him (my sister was killed 9 years
ago). So, I’m only a
part-time parent but it’s still hard.
He’s a great kid with a lot of potential but still, I can’t imagine what
full-time parents must go through and give up. Between family, law school and my own personal obligations,
the drive back to LA is probably the most peaceful time of my week. If traffic is moving and it’s
dark the drive is so peaceful that it is almost a meditation. Of course, my mind is still thinking
but it seems to slow down during this kind of drive. Lately, my thoughts have been preoccupied with my upcoming
summer law courses in Argentina and my last year of law school in general. I’m pretty excited about my
professional future.
